How to Prevent Electrical Hazards in Wilton Manors, FL; Cover Outlets & Light Switches, Cord Inspection & More

People use electricity every single day. Electricity lights up our homes and businesses, provide power to our cooking, cleaning and entertainment systems. Electricity is flowing through our homes and businesses every single second. As we greatly depend on electricity we also must be aware of its dangers and work to prevent any electrical hazards. Burley Electrical Services would like to share a few tips on preventing electrical hazards.

Dangers of Mixing Water & Electricity

Most people know you never mix water with electricity, which also include electrical devices. Electrical devices that are plugged into the wall which gets wet can become a hazard. If a blow dryer, curling iron, or even a countertop appliance gets wet you will want to unplug it. Dry off the electrical device before plugging it back in. Electrical currents can run through the device causing electrocution. If needed, keep the appliance unplugged until it is dry, just to be safe.

Undersize or Oversized Circuit Breakers or Fuses

If your home uses a fuse box or an electrical panel it is important they use the right sized breaker or fuses. At times the breaker or fuse will need to be replaced, and fuses most of all. When a breaker or fuse needs to be replaced, never use the wrong size. Both the fuse and breaker is designed to stop massive electrical surges. If they are not properly sized they cannot stop power surges in time. This can be hazardous. If a fuse or breaker needs to be replaced, make sure to size them correctly or seek professional assistance.

Cover Outlets & Light Switches

Outlets and light switches need to remain covered for a number of reasons. If outlets and light switches are left uncovered, moisture can get inside and come in contact with the wiring and electrical systems. Additionally, with the wiring exposed there is a higher risk of electrical shock. Uncovered outlets and light switches pose a hazard in the home. If a face-plate breaks, you can replace them for less than a dollar.

Electrical Cord Inspection

A number of electrical appliances, devices, and power tools use a power supply cord. It is important to inspect the cord and plug when using a power supply cord. Especially during the holiday season where a number of holiday decorations come out of storage. To ensure your safety, inspect the cord for cracks, melted sites, or frays. If the protective cover is compromised, do not use it. If any wiring is exposed along the cord and at the plug, they pose a major safety risk. Regardless as to what you are about to plug into an outlet, always check the cord and plug for signs of damages or potential dangers.
