What your Lights Say About your Age

As people age, many things change in their life. They may need a higher prescription eyeglasses, hearing aids and help with walking. One thing that you may not have known is that the older you get the more light you need to see as well as possible. There are studies that show that as you age the amount of light needed can double from 30 to 60 years in age. Another thing that changes when it comes to light and aging is that the glare can effect someone in their 60’s much more then someone in their 30’s. That seems like you are stuck choosing one or the other since the more light you expose to a room the more glare will be there.

Lighting Suitability

When you are deciding what kind of lighting is best for your home, you should look at the age of the people that are staying there. People younger than 60 years of age may be okay with a lamp or a few overhead lights to illuminate a room. They also would be okay with less light on when the television is playing. In general, people younger than 60 are ok with less light and they can still see everything just fine. If you are in the group over 60 you will want to make some changes to how you are lighting your home. One way to add the amount of light that is best suited to someone over 60 is to use extra lamps in rooms that you spend lots of time in. Another way is to use specific kinds of lights that help illuminate the light better such as lights that have glass bowl shades that help distribute the light around the room. You can also have more overhead lighting installed and added to your most used rooms. It is best to have light coming from different angles for the most definition in lighting. You also can use fixtures that have an extra reading light that is movable that you can set up near a seat that you read at often. A trick when watching television is to add some more light to the room using lamps. This can keep the contrast from the television less so that you are able to see it more clearly.
