When it comes to electricity there are some fun facts and information that is certainly quite interesting. Burley Electrical Service Inc has prepared the following list of fun electricity facts:
Lightbulbs – Did you know that a standard lightbulb only uses 10% of its energy to actually light the bulb. The other 90% of the energy is actually heating the bulb. There are CFL bulbs now that use 80% less the energy as a standard bulb and emit less heat. They also last 12 months longer as well.
Refrigerators – Refrigerators are used in every home in the United States. They use as much energy as 25 large power plants use in a year. Can you imagine life without being able to keep your favorite foods cooled?
Sunlight – The amount of sunlight that hits the surface of the earth every minute could generate enough energy to support the worlds demand for an entire year. The more focus put on using sunlight for solar energy could help keep our unrenewable resources safe.
Power Outage – The largest power outage ever recorded was in August 2004. The power was out across the northeastern United States and into Canada. The outage effected over 50 million people!
Ceiling Fans – A ceiling fan fixture can cost between $2000 – $5000 in energy usage over its lifetime but this is still a lot cheaper than running an air conditioner. The cost to run a ceiling fan throughout the year may cool down the people but be sure to turn the them off when not in the room as the motors will start giving off a lot of heat instead!
Watt – A watt is the way energy is measured. The amount of energy used or produced is written as watts. It came from an engineer named James Watt that help to develop a better steam engine.
Hospitals – Did you know that hospital buildings use more energy than other buildings their size. They have lots of equipment that requires them to run 24 hours a day.
