What Would Cause a Doorbell to Stop Working in Boca Raton, FL? Bad Transformer, Button & More

When your doorbell isn’t working, it can be more than inconvenient. Depending on how large your home is, you may not be able to catch people that come to your door if you aren’t close enough to hear them knock. There are a few things that could be wrong when you have a doorbell that is not ringing for one reason or another. Can a Doorbell Button Go Bad?

The very first place you should turn is to the button if you aren’t hearing your doorbell ring. 9 times out of 10, there will be a button that has stopped working and that will be the end of your search for the cause of a doorbell problem. You can remove the button and see that there are two wires that have to make contact with the button when it is pressed. If there is one that is broken or one that isn’t in the right place, you have gotten to the bottom of your mystery. You can try touching the two wires together to see if they make the doorbell ring. If there is any damage to the wires, you will want to leave it up to an electrician to get it fixed.

Bell Unit Isn’t Working

The next place you should look is the bell unit that is located inside the home. Once your remove the covering, you will want to inspect it to see if there is any obvious damage. Maybe you see a corroded wire, something disconnected or other pieces that are worn. If this is the case, you have again, solved the mystery. You will need to have a low-voltage tester with you to see if there is power to the bell unit and it is working. If you see that there is damage to the wiring in the bell unit, call an electrician.

Doorbell Transformer Bad

If the two steps mentioned above have yielded no results, it will be time to move on from the bell unit to the transformer. It should be noted here that this will also be a move from low-voltage electricity to a higher voltage. While you can look into it yourself, it may be best to leave the transformer up to a certified electrician.
