What is an Electrical Red Flag when Buying a House in Southwest Ranches, FL? Bad Switches, Outdated Wiring & More

When you’re walking through a home with the intent in buying, you are going to be looking at many things throughout the house. You will be judging the amount of natural light you see pouring through the windows. You will more than likely be looking at the floor plan to see if it would work for your lifestyle. Most will be looking at the overall condition of the home and the potential that is there to make it yours. One thing that is often overlooked when looking at a home for the first time is the electrical system. There are warning signs that you will want to look for that could clue you in to bigger problems than you want to take on. Burley Electrical Services is here to talk about some electrical warning signs you should be looking for when buying a home.

Bad Electrical Switches & Outlets

You can tell a lot about the electrical system when looking at switches and outlets. Look for any chips or broken outlet and switch covers. This could mean that they need to be replaced. You should also be looking for any exposed wires that could be a potential danger to anyone in the house. If you smell something is burning when using the outlets or switches, this is another huge red flag. Sometimes, you may notice an electrical spark or shock when you use a plug or switch. If there are only one or two of them that are showing some of these warning signs then an electrician can more than likely easily fix them. However, if the whole house is filled with them, it is another story.

Outdated Breaker Boxes

The circuit breaker box in any house is there to offer protection against large power surges by automatically shutting off power to the house when one is detected. If the home is older, the breaker box is more than likely not enough to support the power demands of a modern home though and will more than likely need to be upgraded. If the wires are tangled and haphazard with no labels, it can create confusion and isn’t safe either.

Old Wiring that Needs to Be Replaced

There may be wires that are simply worn out throughout the home as well. You may be able to see that there is damage to the actual wiring that could pose a threat to the property. You should also be looking for any buzzing or humming that is happening when lights are turned on as this is a sign that there is an electrical problem somewhere as well.
