Is it Bad that My LED Lights are Making a Buzzing Noise in Sailboat Bend, FL? How to Stop & More

If you enjoy having your lights on a dimmer switch, you are not alone. Many people like having control over how much light their fixtures are emitting. While there are many LED light bulbs that are compatible with dimmer switches, many homeowners still complain that they hear buzzing or humming when their lights are turned all the way up or are turned down low. Burley Electrical Services is here to talk about why this happens with LED lightbulbs sometimes.

Causes of LED Lights Buzzing

When you have incandescent light bulbs in your light fixtures and hear them buzzing, it is usually caused because you can hear the filament vibrating. When you hear your LED light bulbs buzzing, it is usually because there is interference between the dimmer switch and the LEDs driver. Since LED bulbs do not have a filament, they work in a completely different way than traditional incandescent light bulbs do. Usually, the buzzing or humming that you are hearing is caused by the LED’s driver internal electronics vibrating instead. Many homeowners might be concerned that this means danger. However, most of the time this vibrating or humming noise you can hear is completely harmless. You need to remember that if you hear any buzzing or humming coming from a light switch, outlet or wires, you need to have that problem looked at right away by a licensed electrician.

How Do I Stop My Light Bulb from Buzzing?

There are some things that you can try to get the buzzing to stop.
– Make sure that the buzzing isn’t coming from only one light. If that is the case, you can simply remove and replace that one bulb.
– If it is coming from multiple lights, you might want to consider bypassing the dimmer switch. IF your have bypassed the dimmer and they are still buzzing, you need to replace the bulbs with higher quality ones.
– If there is no buzzing, it might be the dimmer switch that needs to be replaced. You need to make sure that any dimmer switch you are using in your home is completely compatible with LED light bulbs. If you don’t, you will be hearing that buzzing forevermore. The biggest downside with changing out the dimmer switch for one that is more compatible is the cost. They are usually much more costly.
