How to Prepare for Emergency Short or Long Term Extended Power Outage in Davie, FL

The State of Florida is not strange to some of the most severe storms and more will surely come in the future. With hurricane Michael hitting Florida, new reports have already predicted power outages through the state. When a hurricane hits the coasts of Florida, power outages can last hours if not days. It is important to be properly prepared. Burley Electrical Services would like to share what you can do to better prepare for future power outages.

Power Outage Emergency Response Plan

Candles & Oil Lamps: When power goes out, it can be difficult maneuvering around in the dark. You will want to make sure you have a reliable light source. It is recommended you stock up on candlesticks or even oil lamps. Both provide enough light in your home during the night time hours to help you safely navigate through your home. You can also use emergency glow sticks or rechargeable flashlights to also help provide light during night time hours.
Generators: For those who don’t like being without power, you can always consider investing in a stand by generator. They can help provide enough power to your home to provide light and keep the refrigerator and cooking equipment on for a few hours or days, depending on how much fuel you have. Especially, those who depend on power to provide power to medical equipment or deceives should invest in a generator.
Gas or Solar Powered Water Heater: Although it is safe to take a cold shower, it is not ideal. For those who still want the luxury of having hot water for bathing or cooking, consider installing a gas or solar powered water heater. They can help provide hot water during the times the power is lost.
Independent Cooking Grill or Stove: When power goes out for a long period of time you will eventually need to find a way to prepare or cook food. It is recommended you keep a small gas fueled grill or stove to provide a means of cooking food.
Keep Water Stocked: For those who live in areas prone to severe storms that result in frequent power outages, residents should always keep extra water bottles stocked. Water is essential for cooking and of course drinking. When a major storm hits it can take days before stores can be restocked and clean water supplied. It is strongly recommended to keep water stocked, especially before a major storm is reported to hit.
When Power Goes Out: When power goes out you will want to go through your home and make sure all of the light switches are turned off and all electrical devices are unplugged. When power is restored it can cause power surges that can cause damages to electrical devices, appliances, and even light fixtures. To help protect the main power used device, appliances and equipment, a power surge protector can help. If you don’t want to worry about electrical damages to the various items in your home, make sure you have sure protectors.
