Myth: Most electrical devices surge more energy when powering it on from the off position, as opposed to leaving it on.
Fact: That notion is very untrue. However, computers and similar devices do have an initial surge in order to power on, but the measurement requires is so minimal that the energy consumption is unaffected. The dollars it costs leaving the computer for hours when not in use doesn’t compare to the pennies it costs turning the computer on when powered down.
Myth: Leaving a light on consumes less energy than turning it off and on.
Fact: Turning the lights on and off does not increase your power usage or your bill increases as switching the light on from the off position does not course an extra power surge. To conserve power keep the lights off when not in use.
Myth: Bad wiring does not affect the usage or cost.
Fact: Leaked electricity due to faulty wiring causes you to pay for electricity not being used for anything in particular and increases your power bill.
Myth: Electronics powered off do not draw any energy.
Fact: The power plug on your electronics is drawing in energy, even when the device is powered off. To ensure they are not using any energy, unplug them or fit them to a power stick that can be switched off when they are not in use is the only way to accomplish the feat.
Myth: To expedite heating or cooling a building to save energy costs, set the thermostat on extreme settings.
Fact: Cranking the A/C down and the heat way up will quickly adjust the temperatures in your home. All you are doing is wasting energy and putting a strain on your HVAC system and appliances, which lead to excessive repairs.
Myth: When you leave your home for the day, leaving the A/C set 85 degrees costs less than turning it off and then trying to cool it back down when someone is home.
Fact: It in fact costs less to cool a home after the A/C is off than leaving it operating all day. Although cooling a home down from 85 degrees instead of 98 degrees might feel more comfortable while you wait for the cooling process. If you are trying to conserve energy and costs, switch it off when you are going to be away for more than two hours.
Myth: The electronic device equipped with 240V uses more energy than the one equipped with 120V compared to identical electronics.
Fact: Energy companies bill for watt hours, not volts. In this scenario, both devices, despite the voltage use the same amount of watts.
