Energy Efficient Electronics & Practices
When concerning our electronic devices, there are multiple ways to conserve energy and save on your next power bill.
Power Strips – Get power strips for your outlets. Start at the entertainment center and plug in all your equipment. When not in use turn the power strip button off. Even when your electronic toys are turned off; if the are plugged in, they will still draw energy. Even the electronics with “standby mode” need to be included as they are constantly sucking energy when plugged into an outlet.
Energy Star Rated – If you are in the market for a new television, shop for Energy Star-qualified TVs. They are up to thirty percent more efficient. While we are on the subject of shopping, if the need for a new computer should arise, consider a laptop. Desktops use a considerable amount more energy than laptops!
Sleep Mode – Booting your computers up every time you need to use it can be cumbersome. During the day when your computer isn’t in use hit the “sleep mode” or “hibernate mode” instead of the screen saver so it uses less electricity when not in use.
Energy Conservation Lighting
There is much that can be done when conserving energy where our lighting is affected.
Compact fluorescent light bulbs – These are more energy sufficient than regular bulbs and you don’t have to sacrifice brightness. Be sure the correct bulb is being used in each fixture. It is wise to include your outdoor lighting in the bulb replacing endeavor. Replacing your top five lighting fixtures and bulb with ENERGY STAR products can save a ton!
Light or Opaque Lamp Shades – Choosing light colored or opaque lamp shades for those lamps in the corners can reflect more light so less lamps are needed.
Motion Detectors and Timers – These are a useful installation that can save energy and cost. Motion detectors have been proven to help deter criminal activity.
